Who is Manifold?

Emma Smith

Manifold is an artwork by Emma Smith, artist in residence for UCL East Multi Lab.

Emma is a multi-award winning artist who creates large-scale installations and engagement programmes as part of a her social practice.

Through social sculpture, performance, and collective action she creates platforms for people to share research, knowledge and experience of the often invisible and extraordinary ways we are all connected. Querying the edges of human perception her work invites people to come together to collectively imagine new futures.

Collaborators

UCL Multi Lab is a new interdisciplinary research and teaching space at UCL East. Multi Lab extends the living lab ecology of UCL’s People and Nature Lab.

People and Nature Lab collaborators include:

Kate Jones, Chair of Ecology and Biodiversity and Director of The People and Nature Lab. Kate’s research sits at the interface of ecological and human health to understand the impact of global land use and climate change with a focus on emerging infectious diseases. Kate has also developed some of the first applied AI tools for monitoring ecosystems.

Izzy Bishop, Lecturer in Ecology

Izzy’s research seeks to reverse global and local declines in freshwater biodiversity through research, monitoring and citizen science.

Dan Maynard, Associate Professor in Quantitative Ecology

Dan uses a wide range of experimental and statistical approaches to understand how biodiversity is maintained in hyper-diverse ecosystems and to forecast how forest communities will adapt in the next 100 years.

Dean Bell, Lecturer in Urban Ecology and Ecosystems

Dean is an urban forestry and greening specialist. His work is focused on plant-soil systems and applied science and education.

Rory Gibb, Royal Society Research Fellow

Rory is an ecologist and epidemiologist. His research seeks to understand how changes in climate, ecological and social systems combine to drive infectious diseases in people and animals.

Elli Leadbeater, Professor of Ecosystems and Biodiversity Research

Elli’s research looks at how animal behaviour evolves and functions in anthropogenic landscapes, looking in particular at insects, why environmental legislation often fails to protect them and how those impacts could be mitigated.

Joanne Littlefair, Lecturer Genetics, Evolution Environment and UKRI Future Leaders Fellow

Joanne’s has developed airborne eDNA sampling to investigate terrestrial biodiversity and responses to human impacts.

UCL People and Nature Lab is part of UCL’s Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research.

CBER collaborators include:

Artemis Skarlatidou, Lecturer in Citizen Science

Artemis is a Geography member of the People and Nature Lab and her research is rooted in the democratisation of science and policy.

Jakleen Al-Dalal’a, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow

Jakleen works on the CHRYSES Project: mapping environmental health crises and public understanding through myths and science

CBER is part of UCL Faculty of Life Sciences.

Faculty of Life Science collaborators include:

Gail Taylor, Dean of Faculty of Life Sciences

Gail is an expert in plant sciences, environment, agritechnology, renewable energy, genetics and plant breeding and climate change.

Lucy van Dorp, Principal Research Fellow

Lucy’s research looks at human and microbial population genetics, reconstructing the evolutionary history of significant infectious diseases.

The Manifold LED data line has been developed with Duncan Wilson as part of CASA:

CASA collaborators include:

Duncan Wilson, Professor of Connected Environments

Duncan’s research looks at how emerging technologies such as connected sensora and cognitive computing can augment our understanding of the built and natural environment.
