Unlearning ecological autonomy through nature led thinking
Manifold live is a programme of activities to unlearn ecological autonomy through nature led thinking. Embedded in Multi Lab research and local knowledge Maniflold live nurtures understanding of our being part of local and global ecologies.
Created as part of artist Emma Smith’s social practice, Manifold live is programmed seasonally. Each season grows through the ecological entanglements of the connecting environmental elements of our locality; water, air, plant and habitat.
SPRING: WATER
Spring.
- Move suddenly or rapidly upwards or forwards > cause to rise from cover
- Originate or appear from
- The season after winter and before summer
- A place where water wells up from
The WATER season brings together partners along the Navigable and Old River Lea to channel our inner rivers in support of nature agency.

SUMMER: AIR
Summer.
- A period of conscious development in a person’s life characterized by growth and joy
- Time spent in a particular place
- The season after spring and before autumn
- When fledglings learn to fly
The AIR season follows the prevalent direction of the wind from UCL Multi Lab connecting communities who share an airborne pathway between the River Lea and the River Roding. This seasons’ activities shift scale to gain multi-species perspectives through the invisible worlds and airborne ecologies of Newnham and Redbridge.

AUTUMN: PLANT
Autumn.
- Begins with harvest
- Day length decreases and night length increases
- The season after summer and before winter.
- Post mitotic senescence: a change of colour
The PLANT season connects community gardens for people and pollinators to collectively develop ideas of nurture for multi-species community, seeding climate smart assemblages for the future.

WINTER: HABITAT
Winter.
- Wintering / overwintering / winterer (humans, plants or cattle)
- Period of stratification necessary for germination
- The season of the year after Autumn and before Spring
- When transitional spaces critical for survival
The HABITAT season connects local and global communities and habitats, unfolding our entangled ecology through edge habitats as spaces of multi-species co-habitation.
