A workshop to collectively map experiences of crisis and care on the River Lea. How do people remember floods, pollution events, or other environmental crises? How can we understand and share these experiences in ways that reflect lived realities, emotional connections and alternative ways of knowing?

Through participatory mapping, this workshop holds space for sharing personal and collective stories of crisis, memory and care to capture the multiple ways people make sense of disruption, uncertainty and environmental change.

This workshop is a collaboration between artist Emma Smith and The Crysees Project with

Jakleen Al-Dalal and Artemis Skarlatidou: an international research collaboration that examines how environmental health crises are understood, remembered, and communicated through maps, stories, and community knowledge. Together, the team aim to understand how UCL can best support local communities in their ongoing efforts to care for and improve the river.

Workshop participants stand around a long aerial map of the River Lea marked with sticky notes while the artist talks it throughParticipants lean in over the aerial map, pointing out places along the river and adding sticky notesA hand draws river memories in felt-tip pen — pennywort, dead fish and graffiti spray cans — each labelled in handwritten capitalsParticipants around the workshop table trace the river's course onto tracing-paper overlays laid across large aerial maps
